Communication

Communication with your child is the key to their own knowledge and understanding of life situations and to their understanding of the emotions of each individual within the family unit.

Children, when they are young, are open and honest; they only learn to lie and not be truthful based on their own experiences and interactions within the family unit.

The more we discuss, the more we know and learn about each other.

The more we discuss, the more we understand each other.

The more we discuss, the more we can make better choices and have empathy.

The more we discuss, the more respect and comfort we will feel towards each other.

The more we discuss, the more we will learn to help one another and feel a sense of security and safety within the family unit.

Communication allows your relationship with your child to develop. By developing, your child learns to know you, trust you, and respect you. Your child will be more apt to discuss important things with you that they will encounter in their lives. Truly knowing them is truly letting them know you.

If you look to dysfunctional homes and relationships, communication is not a factor. It is something that is lacking; it is something within their homes and specific relationships that others learn to do instead of actually talking and listening to each other. Communication happens in negative ways such as abuse, neglect, and/or violence.

Communication is not just talking, but listening as well. Listening to your child, will in turn help them to listen to you. It becomes a mutual respect. Playing, reading, talking (about everything, explaining, and interacting with each other), and being a good role model is all part of the communication process.

Communication is the key to knowing your child and for your child to know you. Only then will they feel the courage and trust in you to confide in you. If you start early and build throughout the life of a child, that child will probably get through the teenage years making better decisions and causing you less stress. That child will continue to communicate in their own life, which is the ultimate goal.
