Ellen Degeneres talked about this after the backlash she received from sitting next to a Republican – George Bush! Here is her comment:
“During the game, they showed a shot of me and George laughing together, and so people were upset. They thought, ‘Why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president?’…Here’s the thing. I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have…We’re all different, and I think we’ve forgotten that that’s okay that we’re all different…But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them…When I say, ‘be kind to one another,’ I don’t only mean the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone.”
The reason why I am putting this on my blog is because of all the things we are supposed to teach our children; things children learn in school; things they should be learning at home; things that should be part of raising adults for our future democracy.
Kindness to everyone, no matter what, is something that needs to be learned or taught to everyone and should be shown and/or expected by others. Are we not supposed to be united? Are we not supposed to accept and endure our differences. Today, in our times, is when we definitely need to be begin to “be kind to everyone!”
